As the clock started to wind down in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s Christmas Eve game between the Oakland Raiders and the Indianapolis Colts, Oakland quarterback Derek Carr seemed to have it all.
Oakland was on its way to what would be a 33-25 victory, giving the Raiders a spot in the NFL playoffs.
Carr, a potential MVP candidate, was having another great game in a season that saw him steadily improve to be one of the league’s top quarterbacks.
Then it happened. With about 12 minutes left, Carr was injured. The injury was later diagnosed as a broken fibula, which effectively ended Carr’s season.
However, Carr’s reaction was not that of someone who had lost hope
He used his Instagram account to reply to his many fans.
“This will be a day I will never forget! He will be glorified!!! Much love everybody! I will be back stronger than ever very soon!!!” he wrote.
He also added a longer message telling his supporters that, despite his injury, he still considers himself blessed.
“Thank you to everyone that has been praying for me! Things happen in life that we don’t always understand, BUT I do KNOW this: I serve a God that loves me and this is the ultimate healer!” he wrote.
“I am not worried one bit. I will bounce back and be on my feet within no time! Thank you for all of the love that you Raider Nation showed me in that stadium today. I will be back This is a team sport! So everything WE want is still out there for us!” he added.
“See y’all soon! God bless and Merry Christmas!” he wished his fans.
Back in 2015, Carr noted that his football career was a precarious existence, but his faith was solid.
“I have a very strong faith in God. He is the reason I play football. He has given me this special talent and I want to use it to glorify Him. I am grateful for the opportunity to further His kingdom by sharing my faith on and off the football field. At any moment, any second, my football career could be taken away, but my faith and relationship with God will never be taken from me,” Carr said.
Carr has continually engaged his fans in a dialogue about what matters most to him.
“What they call work I call worship!” he posted on Instagram earlier this month.
“Never ashamed of who’s I am and who brought me here. Yahweh is faithful to those who walk WITH Him! He has given me so many blessings my cup overflows starting with my beautiful family and friends,” Carr wrote.
“Then way down the list I get to play football for my job. I just pray I remain faithful with this platform to do His work! Love and appreciate every single one of you. There is a treasure inside all of you! God bless and Go Raiders!” he added.
