Alan Dershowitz warned Friday that the Democrats’ top choice to chair the Democratic National Committee will leave the party in shambles if appointed and will prompt the renowned Harvard law professor to leave the party.
“I’m going to tell you right here on this show, and this is news — if they appoint [Minnesota Rep.] Keith Ellison to be chairman of the Democratic Party, I will resign my membership to the Democratic Party after 50 years of being a loyal Democrat,” Dershowitz told the Fox Business Network on Friday.
Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress, has faced backlash for weeks over his past statements about Israel. The Investigative Project on Terrorism obtained audio of Ellison at a private fundraiser in 2010 in which the Minnesota congressman complained to a private audience that the Jewish state has control of the United States’ foreign policy.
Dershowitz repudiated Secretary of State John Kerry’s speech on Israel and blasted Ellison for his ties to the notoriously anti-Semitic Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.
“[The New York Times] has a story today saying only right-wing Jews condemn Kerry. Hey, I’m a left-wing liberal Jew, [New York Sen. Chuck] Schumer is a liberal Jew — you know, they just make up the news,” Dershowitz told the Fox Business Network’s Sandra Smith. “If they now appoint Keith Ellison, who worked with Farrakhan, to be chairman of the DNC, you’re going to see a lot of people leave.”
The Obama administration’s handling of the U.N. resolution condemning Israeli settlements was not only a rebuke of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Dershowitz argued, but an act of revenge against President-elect Donald Trump.
Punishing Israel at the United Nations after the election “shows how uncourageous and how undemocratic this is because [Obama] does it at a time when Congress is out of session, when there is nobody to check and balance him. It never would have happened if Hillary Clinton would have been elected because President Obama wouldn’t have wanted to tie her hands,” Dershowitz said. “This is revenge, not only against Netanyahu, it’s revenge against Donald Trump as well. And the ultimate victim is not Israel; the ultimate victim is the peace process. It’s going to be so much harder to make peace now. The Palestinians already said they’re not going to negotiate except under the provisions of this U.N. Security Council resolution. It’s also wrong — it’s not illegal for Israel to have control over the Jewish quarter.”
Dershowitz, whose latest book is titled Electile Dysfunction: A Guide for Unaroused Voters, said that he will support some individual Democratic candidates but is weary about the state of the Democratic Party.
“I will still vote my conscience and mostly I’ll vote for Democrats, but I will not be a member of a party that represents itself through a chairman like Keith Ellison and through policies like that espoused by John Kerry and Barack Obama.”
Dershowitz explained in a Dec. 6 interview why he believes Ellison is “the worst possible person” in the history of the party for Democrats to pick as chairman.
“After losing white, middle-class, working-class people in the Midwest, you’re going to pick somebody who for nine years was associated with a hate America, anti-American, anti-Western person?” he said during an interview with Fox Business. “It’s just nuts.”
“He’s going to be great for the Republicans,” Dershowitz continued. “He is going to lose many, many Democrats. He’s going to lose many pro-Israel Democrats, many pro-American Democrats. Forget about Farrakhan’s anti-Semitism, and the fact that this guy was part of that for years. Do you know what he said, at one point, to somebody, when he was a student at the Minnesota Law School? He said to somebody, who was a woman and Jewish, ‘I can have no respect for you’ — this is Ellison saying this, not Farrakhan. ‘I can have no respect for you, because you’re Jewish and you’re a woman, and as a woman, you shouldn’t be working, you should be home.’”
