Radical Islamic terrorist Khalid Sheikh Mohammed admitted that it was former President George W. Bush’s swift response to 9/11 that prevented al-Qaeda from carrying out a “second wave of attacks.”
In the new memoir by Mohammed’s interrogator James E. Mitchell, Enhanced Interrogation: Inside the Minds and Motives of the Islamic Terrorists Trying To Destroy America, the CIA contractor recalls a conversation that sheds some light on how al-Qaeda thought America would react to the 9/11 attacks.
Critics of Bush’s decision have long argued that al-Qaeda carried out 9/11 in order to draw the United States into war with Afghanistan.
According to The Washington Post, Mohammad claimed all those critics were wrong and admitted that al-Qaeda thought the Unites States would respond to 9/11 in a similar fashion as they did with the 1983 bombing of Marine barracks in Beirut.
“Then he looked at me and said, ‘How was I supposed to know that cowboy George Bush would announce he wanted us ‘dead or alive’ and then invade Afghanistan to hunt us down?’” wrote Mitchell.
He continued: “KSM explained that if the United States had treated 9/11 like a law enforcement matter, he would have had time to launch a second wave of attacks.” He was not able to do so because al-Qaeda was stunned “by the ferocity and swiftness of George W. Bush’s response.”
Mohammad expected that the U.S. would only arrest terrorist operatives and fire off a couple missiles into empty tents; other than that, al-Qaeda anticipated on being left alone.
Mitchell’s new book also details how Islamists ultimately wants not to destroy the United States through military attacks, but by taking advantage of its immigration system and “outbreeding nonmuslims”.
“It would be nice,” [Mohammad] said, if al Qaeda or like-minded Islamists could bring America to its knees with catastrophic attacks, but that was unlikely to happen; ‘not practical’ is the wording he used,” wrote Mitchell. “From his perspective, the long war for Islamic domination wasn’t going to be won in the streets with bombs and bullets and bloodshed. No, it would be won in the minds of the American people.”
“He said the terror attacks were good, but the ‘practical’ way to defeat America was through immigration and by outbreeding non-Muslims. He said jihadi-minded brothers would immigrate into the United States, taking advantage of the welfare system to support themselves while they spread their jihadi message. They will wrap themselves in America’s rights and laws for protection, ratchet up acceptance of Sharia law, and then, only when they were strong enough, rise up and violently impose Sharia from within.”
In the past, President-elect Donald Trump has proposed a ban on all Muslims entering the United States until the country can get a handle on Islamic terrorism.
That proposal still remains on his website.
